What is your current job and how did your planning degree prepare you for it?
I currently work as a Senior Transportation Planner at the Region of Peel in the Greater Toronto Area. In this role, I apply travel demand models to support long-range transportation planning and policy development. I also collaborate with local municipal and provincial partners to ensure our transportation network supports sustainable growth and aligns with broader regional objectives.
My planning degree provided a strong foundation in urban transportation systems, land use and transportation interactions, and data analysis, which are essential for connecting technical modeling work with real world planning goals. It also helped me develop the analytical and critical thinking abilities needed to translate complex data into practical community focused solutions that contribute to more sustainable and accessible cities.
Why did you choose to study urban planning?
Growing up in Dhaka, Bangladesh, I witnessed firsthand the challenges and opportunities that come with rapid urban growth. Those experiences inspired me to study urban planning and understand how cities can be better designed to serve their people. The field offered the perfect balance between technical analysis and community impact, allowing me to combine my interest in data, design, and evidence-based policy development with a genuine desire to help shape more livable and sustainable cities. I was also drawn to how urban planning brings together different disciplines and perspectives, encouraging planners to think critically and creatively about how today’s decisions influence the future of our communities, from transportation systems to housing and the environment.
What advice would you share with someone who is considering a career in urban planning?
Urban planning is a dynamic and rewarding field that combines technical analysis with creativity and community engagement. My advice is to stay curious and explore different areas of urban planning to discover what inspires you most. When I was studying urban planning, I found it valuable to choose a stream and electives that aligned with my interests, in addition to the core courses. This helped me build specialized skills and stay motivated throughout the program. I also recommend seeking out internships, mentorship opportunities, and real-world projects early on, as they are invaluable for understanding how theory translates into practice.
