More about Sutapa
What is your current job and how did your planning degree prepare you for it?
I currently work at Kittelson & Associates – a transportation engineering and planning consulting firm that partners with public agencies and private organizations to address complex challenges through research, planning, operations, and design. I work as a Transportation Analyst.
I’ve always been passionate about transportation, which is why I focused on transportation planning courses during my time at UIUC. For my capstone project, I conducted a walkability audit of the UIUC campus, which deepened my understanding of how planning decisions shape mobility and accessibility. These experiences not only confirmed my interest in the field but also helped me demonstrate that commitment during the hiring process at Kittelson.
Why did you choose to study urban planning?
I have a background in architecture, and during my final year, I took a course on urban planning that introduced me to the larger, city-scale dimension of design. That experience opened my eyes to how planning decisions influence communities at every level – from neighborhoods to entire regions. I realized I wanted to contribute to shaping cities and systems in ways that improve how people live and move, which ultimately inspired me to pursue a career in urban planning.
What advice would you share with someone who is considering a career in urban planning?
If you’re unsure where your interests lie, start by exploring a variety of introductory planning courses – urban design, transportation, housing, environmental planning, and so on. Once you find an area that excites you, dive deeper: take advanced courses, get involved in research or volunteer projects, and seek out internships that let you apply what you’ve learned in real-world settings.
Urban planning is a broad field, and building hands-on experience early helps you discover your niche and develop the skills to excel in it.
